The gesture controls have to swiped early to get it right as they are a little more laggy than you anticipate.

On your first run through a level keep the Captain moving. There is no need to fight ALL the enemy or collect ALL the documents.

The simplist and most effective attack move in the game is the slide as it knocks the enemy into the air.
