For some reason, if you go through the game a certain order, the game is much easier. Do the levels in this order:

Chill Penguin
Storm Eagle
Spark Mandrill
Armored Armidillo
Flame Mammoth
Sting Chameleon
Launch Octopus
Boomer Kwanger
and, oviously, Sigma.
