While the system is powered off, hold the Volume Down button. Press the Power Button, then after a second let go of the Volume Down button, and then begin holding the Volume Up button until a few seconds after the Nintendo logo appears on-screen. This results in minimally booting the system and automatically checking for an update to the firmware, downloading it if possible, before booting normally.
