After getting a sufficient hip count and a good arsenal, grind completed levels to earn higher ranks to unlock more powerful ships and weapon upgrades.

When first starting, do not bother saving for another costly ship. Instead, investing in basic upgrades and weapon modifications to your starter ship. Adding the homing missiles and smart bombs will allow the starter ship to remain useful for quite some time.
