There's a big red button on the back of each bumper, and hitting it will cause that bumper to shoot off with much more force than usual. You can use this to chase characters down and push them off the edge, though it's difficult to catch up with them, since you move at the same speed. Instead, it's best to get behind characters while they're locking horns with another, so you can sneak in and push them off quietly.
