Power-ups will float over your character while he works. Tap them to use them immediately. Useful ones are the slow-motion activator that makes it easier to hit the green sections of the bar and the extra hit when the boss is not looking. Note that there are bad power-ups that are usually highlighted in red that should be avoided.
