In the early stages of a match, look for big planets with low numbers of ships, as they can be captured quickly and used to boost your fleet.
Defence
Do not neglect defence. It's too easy to divert your entire fleet to a battle in one corner of the screen, and leave a swathe of planets skimpily guarded.
