Factions

You cannot switch from the Enlightened to Resistance factions or vice versa without re-installing the game. However, if you have connected the game to Facebook, you can go to the device menu, sign out, then log in under a username to choose the opposite faction.

Items

The most common XMP type is the Burster. Use them for general capturing and attacking.

Save Ultra Strikes for targets that require large amounts of damage. Although Ultra Strikes have a smaller blast range than Bursters, they do more damage.

Power Cubes are crystallized XM formations. They can be used any time to restore your XM supply. The level 1 version contain 1,000 XM.

Mods give bonus effects to your portals. Some of them are as follows. A single agent can only equip a specific portal with two mods. Another agent will have to fill the two remaining slots. Certain mods will have less of an effect if stacked with the same type.

Link Amplifier: Increases the portal's link range.

Multi-hack: Increases the amount of times an agent can hack the portal before it goes into cooldown.

Portal Shield: Increases the defense of your portal and its resonators (Common +30% damage mitigation, Rare +40%, Very Rare +60%). A portals damage mitigation also increases when linked to other portals, up to 95%. You can stack Portal Shield mods to increase their total effect.

Portals

Portals are large glowing crystal formations and have three varieties: blue, green, or grey. When owned by the Resistance it will be blue, and green for the Enlightened. Neutral portals are grey. When you hack a portal, you will receive XM as well as items and weapons. When you attempt to hack an opposing portal, it will fight back and drain some XM while you are in range. Once you start hacking one of these portals, immediately run away to preserve your XM.

Use eXotic Matter Pulses (XMPs) to fire upon enemy portals within scan range. This disrupts enemy control of the portal and allows up to claim it for your own faction by deploying a Resonator. The higher level of the Resonator, the more XM produced and more difficult it will be for the portal to take down. You can only place resonators up to your own personal level. Portals can have up to a maximum of eight resonators.

You can link portals together, using large amounts of XM. Start by equipping a portal with eight resonators. Recharge all resonators to maximum capacity by tapping the "Recharge" button and spending XM. Then, hack the fully charged portal to obtain its unique Portal Key. After it is in your inventory, move to another portal to link with it. Equip the new portal with eight resonators and fully charge them. Then, tap the "Link" button and select the original portal. Note: The higher level resonators in use, the farther the link can go. Additionally, links cannot intersect and will shut down if their resonators run out of power or are attacked.

The most effective way to progress is to blast other portals, set up your own portals, and develop links from them. When you acquire friendly portals, you will earn items from them. You will more of an advantage from attacking other portals than defending your own.

When attacking enemy portals, stand as close as possible to them. When you use an XMP attack, a blast wave will appear around you in your scanner range. Because a portal's resonators surround it, the closer you are to the portal the more resonators you will hit, maximizing your damage.

Because portals need eight fully charged resonators in order to link properly, destroy only one resonator on a portal. This will save your resources while preventing the enemy from establishing a link.

Various strategies

The small triangle is your current location, while the yellow circle that surrounds it is your scan range. The small glowing orbs are Exotic Matter (XM). Your current XM reserve is represented by the bar above your name. It is increased by getting an XM particle within your scan range.

Your primary goal is to collect XM. Deploy Resonators to create a new portals. Line those portals together to develop fields then hack the friendly portals for rewards. To work towards this goal, use your blasters to attack and destroy other faction's portals. After they are pinned down, you can steal them for your own faction.

XM

Recycle unneeded items, such as media collectibles, to get XM.

XM Fields

XM Fields are made by linking three portals together in a triangle formation. This will create a protective field will be established.
