Attacking
Look for weaknesses in your opponent's defense. If possible, position your troops where they are out of the range of defensive towers. Take out mines first, if possible.
Upgrade Zeus, near the Drill Ground, for more effective artillery.
Building bases
The only location where troops can be placed to attack is at the bottom. Plan your base design to defend that area. Move your Command Center to the upper part of the base to make it the most difficult building to travel to. Set decoy buildings, including mines in front of it. If possible, place Watchtowers and other defensive structures to create a row of buildings between them and attackers. When first starting, play single player missions to gain resources while building your base. Work on upgrading your resource buildings first, followed by silos, and finally your defensive towers. You will need a reliable flow of resources and a high level Command Center before you should work on building up your base. Upgrade your Drill Ground as high as possible to have many troops available for battle. Purchase low cost buildings first. Start with Radar to make missions easier, followed by the Laboratory and Hangar. Repair the Squad Hall when possible.
