During combat, each of your foes has a simple 'tell' regarding what they're going to do next. Learn them and move/counter accordingly.

Taking branching pathways isn't required to complete the game, but many lead to rooms with health packs lurking within.

Don't blow your special attack immediately when fighting stronger enemies, let the bar build to unleash more devastation when you finally use it.
