Each time a run is started you are given a choice of boosts that can be purchased. The auto shield can be useful, as well as a restart.
Costumes
Costumes award you with a permanent score multiplier. Obtain them as soon as possible to increase the number of points you earn per game. You can then get power-ups that will increase the duration of the power-ups that are collected.
Goo
If you get stuck in pink goo, swipe to increase Sackboy's speed to avoid getting eaten. Take care because pink goo is usually followed by spikes and obstacles, often making it necessary to jump as soon as you escape.
Jumping
A longer tap will result in a higher jump than a short tap. However a long tap followed by a swipe is even more useful when the gaps between platforms get larger. Higher platforms usually contain more bubbles, bonuses, and enemies than the lower ones. Use jumping points or ramps to get as high as possible.
Shield
Your shield is charged by collecting coins. When full, activate it as needed. The shield meter will not begin filling again unless it has been depleted.
Traps
'No Sackboys' signs will indicate the presence of traps that will immediately end your run. To survive, make sure your shield is activated. Those areas usually contain better rewards.
Upgrades
Start by upgrading the magnet because it is power-up that is found most often.
