As you progress in any one battle and use more spells, you'll gain access to far more powerful, ultimate spells. You get there just by using multiple spells of that type, and of course you'll last in battle by timing your defensive magic, and healing when possible. Since it's a real time battle system, waiting for more icons to drop and timing your moves can be very valuable.
