Early on, make sure that you purchase businesses as quickly as possible, and to upgrade them to at least level ten. Along the way, make sure you're also investing in auto-collect upgrades and improving your tap income, but businesses are key. Once you have a hotel and have upgraded it to 10 or so, then it's time to head back through and upgrade your early buildings to around level hundred, to take advantage of speed improvements.
