Normally, the Gold Space Pirates can only take damage when you shoot them from behind; they'll simply block any frontal attacks. However, they're actually programmed to take damage if they're shot while they and Samus are facing the same way. To take advantage of this glitch, simply fire a shot from the front, and immediately turn Samus to face the other direction. This saves you the trouble of trying to get behind the Pirates.
