Boulders can be pushed around to use as platforms, however they cannot be dug out. When a platform below a boulder is broken, the boulder will fall down momentarily. Sometimes you will need to push boulders downward to use them as a platform. Avoid dropping boulders into the wrong pits, as this may prevent using it to reach treasure or gold. Always check before dropping a bolder down a hole.
