Goods
Spend your goods and gold when they needed the most. However, do not hold off for too long. If the level is almost full, you may fail. Use Goods for high level elements which come at a slower pace. Consider spending gold for the lightning power-up.
Layout
Divide your area in half and use one for mines and the other for farms. Place wood or grass items in the farm portion, and stones in the other. Although this may prove difficult, it increases the chance of getting lots of moves and increasing your store.
Matches
In addition to standard matches, "L" shaped matches will also work. However, diamond or "V" shaped matches do not do anything. The element created out of three that are matched will appear where you placed the last element. Try to cover the sides of the boards and the corners first, and leave the central areas open.
