Avoiding falls
If you accidentally take too many steps, you will fall into the water. However, if you quickly swipe down to backtrack when your character begins falling over the edge you should end up back on the previous tile.
Collectibles
Collect all the key pieces and treasure maps. The chest key pieces are usually found on the main path. However, if one was missed, take some time to explore. The treasure map piece is also important; collecting all of them in a world will unlock the secret level. Completing that secret level will give you an extra continue token.
Continue tokens
You can create a checkpoint at the start of level for the cost of one token. If you complete a level without using a continue token and die on the next level, you will still be taken back to the last checkpoint created. Be very careful where you place checkpoints.
Red tiles
Red stone tiles usually indicate danger. Before you stepping on one, take some time to look around. Determine if there is a moving enemy that will stop on that tile or nearby dart or spike trap that will hit that tile.
