Donuts
Save your donuts after you initially launch. Use a donut only if you see an object you can bounce on, or if you find another donut that you can collect. You can occasionally find donut piles, which resemble giant doughy mounds covered by chocolate. Touch them and they will explode into a shower of donuts. Collect as many of them as possible.
Positioning
Distance is more important than height. Getting very high will not always give you an advantage, especially if there are no boosters that can appear at that altitude. Save your donuts and use boosters and clouds if possible. Items have a better chance to appear in specific zones. For example, some items tend to appear more frequently in the pink sky area, while others only appear in space or underwater.
Snorkel
The Snorkel is a wearable item that allows you to dive underwater one time. Do not use it until you do not have any donuts remaining. You will get two donuts after entering the water. You can remain underwater and use the coffins to move horizontally and perhaps gain more donuts. When you leave the water, Sky Whale will jump out and gain one donut.
Various Tips and Tricks
Save your donuts for cases when you really need them. If you can use a donut to grab another one, that's a net gain.
Buy new items as quickly as possible, and that's especially true of the snorkel. Unlock it as soon as you have the opportunity and use it to dive into the water for easy donuts.
Go for distance, not height. Sticking to the lower levels often will make it easier to manage a decent run, since a lot of the boosters tend to appear at lower elevations.
