You need to lead your target, especially if you want to hit it at maximum distance.

Think about your axe's natural return path and score some hits on the way back.

If you're aiming at a one or two targets, make your axe do a quick sweep of the farthest lines before returning - you'll get a lot of easy, instant kills as enemies creep onto the screen.
