When you start the game and are outside, go to the left, near the waterfall. Go to the third tree from the waterfall and climb it. If you do a handstand on the top of the tree you will get a life. Next, go into the castle's first floor. Then go back outside and to the same tree you got the life from. Climb it and do a handstand. You'll get another life.
