Once you've got a fish on the line; Hold down the right CTRL key and you will switch to fish view. This will allow you to view the fish at the end of your line. If the fish is too small to waste your time with, then simply turn the boat in either direction until your line snaps. Then re-cast. The fish view also works good for monitoring the speed and direction of the fish.
