There are two ways to get a partner what you have to do is battle jaden, syrus, chazz, alexis, zane or chumley and get eight of those hearts filled up on that person when you do that you'll have a big heart by that person's head on your list of duelist. Now the other way you can do it is by giving them sandwhiches from the card shop but if I were you I'd do both of them so it can get filled up quicker.
